Mid-February the Basque employer’s organization Confebask alarmed society and press on the fact that the number of enterprise closures –after already suffering since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008- had accelerated sharply over 2012 and that in the first month of the new year the number of bankruptcies had been of an unprecedented monthly height. Can we create employment without fast growth?

The economic scenario in Spain and throughout most of Europe at the moment is characterised by a depressing mix of low demand, restricted public and private investment, high and rising unemployment, and a general feeling of instability. What is most significant amidst all of this, however, is that we are being challenged in terms of our expectations from socioeconomic development. We are used to being part of economies that grow steadily, positioned within a fairly stable world economic order, and to not worrying too much about the environmental constraints of our activities. This has changed, raising new challenges and requiring a fundamental shift in attitudes and expectations. (más…)
